WE ARE THE ASTEROID
BreckCreate
Breckenridge, CO
September 13 – 22, 2022

BreckCreate is thrilled to announce an artist talk with New York artist Justin Brice: “WE ARE THE ASTEROID: Communicating the Urgency of the Ecological Crisis” this Monday, September 19th at 5:30 p.m. at Old Masonic Hall, free with registration. Brice (b. 1974) is a visual artist known for his work on ecological issues. His photographic, sculptural, and installation works address the Anthropocene, the name given to our current ecological period, in which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment. We Are the Asteroid is a series of conceptual, text-based public artworks by Brice that were on display throughout Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA), August 12 - 21, that draw attention to climate change. We Are the Asteroid will be on display again daily starting September 16 through 22 on the Arts District Lawn, Riverwalk Lawn and Parking Center Promenade.

As the French philosopher BRUNO LATOUR has noted, “the problem in understanding changes in climate — in the geographical, geological, social, and political senses — is one of language, of translating huge and often abstract databases and events for human comprehension.”

In this fast paced, highly stimulating lecture, Brice will discuss how he attempts to make the incredibly abstract issues of climate change and the ecological crisis approachable and accessible to the general public in an effort to broadly raise the public consciousness on these existential issues. His most recent bodies of work — text-based and exhibited in public spaces — will be featured in his talk.

Over the last two decades, Brice has frequently collaborated with scientists, philosophers, and journalists in order to forge a deeper understanding of human impact on the planet. Notably, this included a series of missions he flew with NASA scientists. Beginning in 2015, Brice documented Greenland's rapidly changing glacial land and sea ice for use as source material in works first presented in 'Earth Works: Mapping the Anthropocene,' his solo exhibition debuting at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. The exhibition has since traveled to the USC Fisher Museum of Art, Los Angeles.
